THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SAINT CECILIA

Musica celestiale

The National Academy of  SAINT CECILIA is one of the most ancient musical  institutions in the world.
It draws its origins from the Association that was formed in Rome 1566 and was officially constituted by the Pontiff Gregorio XIII in 1585 with the title of "Congregation of the Musicians under the invocation of the Blessed Virgin and by the Saints Gregorio and Cecilia" to which the title of Academy was added.
The congregation admitted only those in possession of one of the required titles: master composers, organists, singers and instrumentalists.

Even throughout the various transformations experienced over time, the Institute has maintained its original character of association, according to its current statute made up of 70 actual academics (italian) and 30 honorary academics (non-italian).

The academic register has included throughout centuries, the most prestigious names of italian music; to be particularly remembered amongst the others, Giovanni Pierluigi from Palestrina, who played an important part in forming the congregation: Archangelo Corelli, Claudio Monteverdi, Luigi Cherubini, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Gaspare Spontini, Nicoḷ Paganini, Gioacchino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, Giuseppe Verdi, Alfredo Casella, Ottorino Respighi, Giorgio Federico Ghedini, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Gianfranco Malipiero, Luigi Dallapiccola, Goffredo Petrassi, Luigi Nono, Luciano Berio, as well as other major contemporary interpreters.

Even if the goals of the institution have been subject to, in the course of the centuries, continuos modifications, the inspirations of the Institute have been, and remain to promote and increase the art of music in each performance.
With the inauguration on February 2 , 1985, of the Hall in Via dei Greci, the Academy of Saint Cecilia begins its regular concert activity, which in 1908 develops further with the constitution of the Orchestra and of the choir.
